What’s the Difference Between a Psychologist and a Psychotherapist?

If this applies to your therapist, this will be discussed in the first meeting before receiving services.

*** Psychological testing is not equivalent to diagnosis. Clinical knowledge, skill, and experience are required to integrate testing with interview, behavioural presentation, and other file information to formulate a clinical determination.

Additional Notes:

Each therapist practices within their area of competency. For example, just as not every physician can conduct surgery, not every psychologist can provide every diagnosis, and not every therapist can treat every issue.

In most provinces/territories, only a family doctor (MD, physician), nurse practitioner, or psychiatrist can prescribe medication.
