Myths and Facts About Video Therapy

6 common myths about video therapy and what we have found to be true:

  • MYTH #1: We offer video therapy due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

FACT: We began providing video therapy prior to the pandemic.

  • MYTH #2: Therapy with someone who lives in my neighbourhood is better.

FACT: No one really wants to bump into their therapist in the grocery store. Being matched with a therapist with training and experience related to your concern is better.

  • MYTH #3: Clients prefer in-person sessions.

FACT: Clients prefer to be matched with the best therapist, even if they do not live near each other or near our offices.

  • MYTH #4: Nothing replaces the intimacy of being in the same room – especially when discussing deeply personal issues.

FACT: Video therapy reduces time spent entering and exiting, cuts through the small talk, and gets to work more quickly on the presenting problem.

  • MYTH #5: Although most of would prefer to work from home if we could – we prefer to travel to therapy sessions.

FACT: Due to better technology, no travelling to sessions, and its effectiveness - video therapy is the preferred approach to address even deeply complex personal issues. We tell our boss we are just as productive at home. Why wouldn’t we prefer video therapy?

  • MYTH #6: Video therapy is always the preferred approach.

FACT: No. Some things are better in-person. If there is a risk of suicide or harm to someone else, local in-person help is needed. If you do not have a computer/smartphone with internet and a quiet, distraction free, confidential space – video therapy is not a suitable approach. If you live near one of our offices and one of our in-office therapists is the best match for you – we will set you up.

The genie is out of the bottle! Video therapy is here to stay.
