Raisa Mahru - B.Comm., M.A., Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) CRPO; Licensed Counselling Therapist (LCT) CCTNB; Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC)

Most days you are a high functioning individual, who is ambitious and highly driven, closely connected with their loved ones and community, assimilating to life in a new country and making space and enjoying their space in this world. Other days, you feel stuck. It’s like walking through molasses. You feel unmotivated, exhausted and confused. Maybe it is pressure from demanding careers, family, relationships, or a lack of self-care. This could be resulting from childhood trauma, grief, fear, shame, guilt, or your own views that is holding you back. Finding your own zen seems to be an unrealistic expectation in today’s fast-paced world. You know you need to break this cycle, make peace with your reality, resolve and process trauma and grief so you can break out of this cycle and move forward.

We have all been there. I have struggled with motivation, setbacks in life, self-compassion and self-esteem. Often, our biggest obstacle to the negative downward spiral is our own selves. After working towards cultivating confidence and self esteem, I would challenge the unhelpful thoughts and those patterns. We would reach out to our networks, focus on building a community around myself who uplifts me and make me feel less vulnerable. This will allow me to make meaningful change and and work towards an enhanced, more desirable life.

The journey then begins. I can relate, and you are not alone. Firstly, we establish and maintain a good rapport with the client. Then we work towards the three-C approach:

Catch it: Identify your negative thoughts, observe the situation where the thoughts are recurring.

Check it: is the thought rational, healthy or helpful?

Change it: Challenge those thoughts to align them realistically without judgement.

Upon consistent practice of this strategy, your confidence and self esteem rises. You are now aware of your resilience and everything that you’re capable of, therefore making progress towards making long-term, meaningful change.

Don’t burn yourself out. Let’s work together and change it!
