Dr. Iara Da Costa
PhD, C. Psych.
I have over 8 years of experience in individual and group psychotherapy for adults. I offer both short- and long-term psychotherapy as well as psychological assessments to adults, starting at 18 years old.
My clinical work focuses primarily on change. I see change as a broad concept that may involve shifts in awareness, attitudes, behaviours, goals, acceptance, or coping strategies. In our work together we will focus on making the changes that will help you improve your relationship with yourself and others and enhance your quality of life.
The direction of our work together will depend on what is getting in the way of you feeling happier and more satisfied. Many obstacles can prevent us from living a satisfying life. They may stem from a history of trauma or invalidating relationships, habits that no longer serve us, or environments and relationships that may hinder our emotional growth. I will help you identify obstacles to your quality of life and develop strategies to tackle them.
I use an integrative approach to psychotherapy. I am trained in emotion-focused, cognitive-behavioural, humanistic, existential, dialectical behavioural, and mindfulness approaches. I have also trained in Behavioural Sleep Medicine and CBT for Insomnia. Together we will identify the method that best serves you and the issues for which you need help.
I find great beauty in the work I do because I see the incredible strength and resilience people have in the face of hardships. I feel honoured that my clients trust me and share intimate parts of their lives with me. I truly appreciate the opportunity to help them find power in vulnerability and opportunities for growth in moments of crisis and loss.
I am a member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario. I have a master's degree and a Ph.D. in psychology obtained through the University of Toronto. My experience includes having worked in university counselling centers, mental health hospitals, and private practices. I trained at the Anxiety Disorders Clinic and the Women's Program, both units of the Center for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). I worked with both inpatient and outpatient clients with significant histories of anxiety, trauma, and severe psychological difficulties.
I have experience with individual and group psychotherapy for panic disorder and agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, and trauma, among other issues. Prior to working in the psychotherapy field I worked for nearly 15 years in organizational psychology holding leadership and consulting positions.
I am particularly interested in helping clients who have a history of trauma and those who struggle with insomnia.
